How to Enter Kitely Virtual Worlds

Entering Kitely virtual worlds is done using a virtual world viewer, which is a program that runs outside the browser.

How do I get the virtual world viewer I need to access Kitely?

If you already have an OpenSim-compatible virtual world viewer then you can use it. If you don't have a virtual world viewer, or you're not sure if it's compatible with OpenSim, then we recommend installing the Firestorm virtual world viewer, which you can download here.

If you already have Firestorm installed but are having problems connecting to Kitely then you might have a version of Firestorm that only works with Second Life. This is possible because Firestorm comes in two different versions: one for Second Life and one for OpenSim. In order to tell which version you have, start the viewer and select the menu option Help > About Firestorm. The version number should include the words "with OpenSimulator support". If it doesn't then this is the Second Life version of Firestorm, and you need to download the OpenSim version of Firestorm.

Although we recommend using Firestorm, this isn't required. If you prefer, you can use any other OpenSim-compatible viewer.

How do I configure my virtual world viewer to access Kitely?

First, make sure you have a viewer that is compatible with OpenSim. See the question above for more information.

Most OpenSim-compatible viewers have the Kitely grid predefined, so you can select it from a menu, and you don't have to configure anything. For example, in Firestorm that menu is labeled "Log into Grid" and is located next to the Username and Password text boxes:

If you're using a viewer that doesn't have Kitely as a predefined option then you'll need to add Kitely as a custom grid in the viewer's Grid Manager. Different viewers have the Grid Manager in different places in their user interface; you'll have to find it. Once you find where custom grids can be defined in your viewer, add the Kitely grid using the following information:

For example, here's how you would define a custom grid in Firestorm. (This is just an example, since as mentioned above Firestorm already has the Kitely grid predefined.)

  1. Select the menu option Viewer > Preferences to open the Preferences window.

  2. Select the Opensim tab on the left-side panel, and then select the Grid Manager tab on the right-side panel.

  3. In the Grid Manager tab, enter Kitely's Login URI in the "Add new grid" text box:

  4. Press the Apply button next to the Login URI

  5. Press the OK button at the bottom of the Preferences window.

  6. The Kitely grid should now appear in the list of available grids. Select it.

How do I configure my firewall to allow access to Kitely?

Most users don't need to configure their firewall, so once you have installed an OpenSim-compatible viewer you should try entering a Kitely world immediately (without following the steps in this section). However, if you are unable to enter the world then the problem might be that your Firewall is blocking access to Kitely. This happens with some firewalls that are included in several popular antivirus solutions, and with organization firewalls (if your computer is running inside an organization's network). In that case, you'll need to make sure that your Firewall isn't blocking access to Kitely. You will need to open the following ports (or ask your System Administrator to do so):

Ports 8002, 8010, 9000-9100 - TCP and UDP
Ports 80 and 443 - TCP (for Web server, HTTP/HTTPS)

If you want to be able to use voice in-world (speak using the microphone, and hear other people), then you also need to open the ports used by Vivox Voice, which is the third-party voice provider that we use. Vivox uses the following ports:

Ports 12000-17000 - UDP (for voice media, RTP/RTCP)
Ports 5060 and 5062 - UDP (for voice control signals, SIP)
Ports 3478 and 3479 - UDP (to aid in setting up voice with NAT, STUN)

How do I change my Kitely password?

Go to the Settings page and click the Change password link.

What if I don't remember my old password?

If you created your Kitely account using the email/password option then the Change Password dialog will ask you to enter your old (i.e., current) password. (However, if you created your Kitely account using Facebook or Twitter then you won't be asked to enter your old password.) If you don't remember your current password then you should reset the password. To do so, click on the Logout link at the top right of the page. Once you're logged out of the Kitely website, click the Login link to open the Login window. In that window, click the Forgot your password? link and enter the email address that you had used to create your Kitely account. We will send you an email with a password reset link.

Where can I find Kitely virtual worlds to visit?

Go to the Explore Worlds page:

Note that the Explore Worlds page only shows worlds that everyone is allowed to visit, but it doesn't show any private worlds that you may also have access to. Also note that this page is filtered based on your account's maturity rating, so it won't show you any Adult worlds unless you change your account's maturity rating to Adult in the Settings page.

What are World Pages and what are they used for?

A World Page is a web page that acts as a gateway to a virtual world. It includes public information about the virtual world, and the identity of the person who manages it. The World Page contains an Enter World button that lets users enter the virtual world. If you are already logged into Kitely using a virtual world viewer then pressing the Enter World button will teleport your avatar to that virtual world. If you aren't already logged in using the viewer then pressing the button will display your viewer login information, and instruct you on how to log in.

You can get to a world's World Page by clicking that world's name when it appear in the Explore Worlds, My Worlds, or History pages. You can share world pages with other users by sending them the world page's URL.

For example, this is the World Page for the Universal Campus world:
